This guide is up-to-date as of Version 1.1.7 of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Section 1: Amiibo Overview / Pros & Cons
Pac-Man has a solid skill set with decent options across the board. His best option, however, is actually his jab. It hits multiple times and comes out so fast that most opponents won’t have time to block the attack. His smash attacks, while not at all outstanding, are effective enough to get the job done. Each one has disjointed range, but are somewhat lacking in power and speed. Pac-Man actually has an excellent set of special moves – unfortunately, his AI has trouble utilizing them, but they still have their uses. Bonus Fruits give Pac-Man access to several different types of projectiles, which all come in handy in different situations. Power Pellet, his side special, serves as a useful attack that strikes multiple times and doubles as a great recovery move. Speaking of recovery, Pac-Man’s is quite good, but again, his AI often misuses his up special unless he’s given a specific custom move.
Unfortunately, Pac-Man suffers from a multitude of flaws. Most of these flaws stem from problems in his AI. First, Pac-Man’s amiibo is nigh incapable of using his Bonus Fruits. Most of the time, he’ll throw the cherry, even if you try and teach him to charge the move. Next, Pac-Man will almost never use Power Pellet to recover, instead choosing to use his up special even though it is possible to use both of these moves in tandem with each other. On the subject of Pac-Man’s up special, his AI butchers it occasionally, bouncing on the trampoline just once before falling to his death. He also has trouble using his Fire Hydrant: once placed, Pac-Man can’t recognize where he dropped the Hydrant. This means that he’ll never launch it at opponents on purpose, only on occasion and by accident. But Pac-Man’s biggest flaw is his grab – it’s both the slowest and least useful grab available, and leaves him horribly vulnerable if missed.
In the competitive metagame, most amiibo to prepare to fight top-tier characters like Bowser and Ganondorf; no one really prepares to fight Pac-Man because he’s so seldom seen. As a result, the element of surprise is certainly on his side, and this gives him a slight advantage.
Section 2: Recommended Equipment
Pac-Man – Recommended Stats & Bonuses

Before you begin training your amiibo, you must equip it with a viable setup of stats and bonuses. The following build has been extensively tested and proven effective:
+60 Attack / +50 Defense / +10 Speed
Pac-Man – Recommended Custom Moves
- Power Pac-Jump: This is a custom move version of Pac-Man’s up special. Power Pac-Jump acts as a more traditional recovery: Pac-Man will only jump once, and the trampoline won’t stick around. Pac-Man’s AI messes up the default version of the move, and choosing Power Pac-Jump ensures that he successfully recovers each and every time.
- Dire Hydrant: This is a custom move version of Pac-Man’s down special. It’s 100% mandatory that you equip your amiibo with this custom move: instead of lingering, the Hydrant will explode on contact with an opponent or a surface. Pac-Man literally cannot function unless he has Dire Hydrant, so make sure you have it before training him.

Section 3: Training Your Amiibo
Amiibo training is a very specific task, and for the best possible results, you will need to go about it very carefully. You can’t just go all-out and use combos and aerials: both of these are frowned upon in the amiibo metagame. Instead, you should remain grounded at all times, punishing your amiibo for every aerial move it uses against you.
To help your amiibo properly utilize its moveset, you will mirror match it from Level 1 all the way to Level 50. Playing timed matches on Ω-form stages is highly recommended.
Pac-Man – Training Tips
- Primary damage-racking moves: jab, forward tilt, and neutral special. Thanks to its perfect blend of power and speed, Pac-Man’s jab is one of his most important attacks. His forward tilt is slightly stronger, but slower. When using Bonus Fruits, fully charge it as often as you can. That means you’ll only ever use the key.
- Primary KO moves: forward smash and up smash. Pac-Man’s forward smash is his strongest attack, but it’s still quite lacking in power. His up smash should be used solely as an aerial punish.
- Moves to avoid: grab and down special. Pac-Man’s grab is the slowest in the game and does not bring him any benefit whatsoever. Do not grab your amiibo, and be sure to dodge any grabs your Pac-Man tries to use. As for Dire Hydrant, your amiibo will use it enough on his own, without being taught.
