Amiibo Training Guide: Meta Knight (Wii U & 3DS)

This guide is up-to-date as of Version 1.1.7 of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

Section 1: Amiibo Overview / Pros & Cons

Amiibo Overview

Meta Knight has a solid moveset. His jab is a good neutral option, and his tilts are fast and consist of several hits. Meta Knight also has a unique set of special moves: all four aid his recovery in addition to functioning as powerful attacks. Further complimenting Meta Knight’s recovery is his access to multiple midair jumps.

However, Meta Knight suffers from many flaws, and is often seen as a poor choice in competitive play. His AI is plagued with several crippling flaws: in general, it makes poor decisions and prioritizes the wrong moves. It overuses its down smash (which is horribly weak) and may self-destruct with its special moves. Meta Knight’s attacks have low knockback, and he often struggles to KO opponents as a result. His forward smash would be a viable KO option if not for its heavy startup lag.

The Verdict

Overall, Meta Knight is a difficult fighter to recommend. Perhaps it is possible to win a tournament with Meta Knight, but at the time of writing, that has not yet happened.


Section 2: Recommended Equipment

Meta Knight  – Recommended Stats & Bonuses

Before you begin training your amiibo, you must equip it with a viable setup of stats and bonuses. The following build has been extensively tested and proven effective:

+80 Attack / +80 Defense / -40 Speed

Meta Knight – Recommended Custom Moves

  • High-Speed Drill: Hence its name, High-Speed Drill flies faster and farther than the default version of the move. It will help prevent your Meta Knight amiibo from using its side special to self-destruct off the ledge.
  • Shield Piercer: This is a custom move version of Meta Knight’s down special. Its slash penetrates shields and covers more vertical distance, making it superior for recovery.

Once your amiibo’s equipment setup is refined and ready to go, your training will officially begin! If you encountered a problem while feeding your amiibo, feel free to jump into Cloud Nine’s Discord server to ask a question.


Section 3: Training Your Amiibo

Amiibo training is a very specific task, and for the best possible results, you will need to go about it very carefully. You can’t just go all-out and use combos and aerials: both of these are frowned upon in the amiibo metagame. Instead, you should remain grounded at all times, punishing your amiibo for every aerial move it uses against you.

To help your amiibo properly utilize its moveset, you will mirror match it from Level 1 all the way to Level 50. Playing timed matches on Ω-form stages is highly recommended.

Meta Knight – Training Tips

  • Primary damage-racking moves: jab, forward tilt, and down smash. These are all fast, strong moves that can help Meta Knight rack up damage in a pinch. Rely primarily on jab and forward tilt, and use down smash sparingly.
  • Primary KO moves: forward smash. Despite its heavy startup lag, forward smash is still Meta Knight’s most optimal KO move (though that is not saying much). Be careful with your timing of this attack – only use it when you know for sure that it will land.
  • Moves to avoid: side special and down special. Both of these attacks move Meta Knight forward, but his control of this movement is limited. If your amiibo uses these moves, it may self-destruct.
  • Recover exclusively with Shuttle Loop. Meta Knight amiibo tend to use down special to recover, which can lead to it self-destructing. Do not use Mach Tornado, High-Speed Drill, or Shield Piercer to recover.

When your amiibo finally reaches Level 50, its training will truly begin. Just like a real player, amiibo need match experience and practice against different characters. For more information on training your amiibo past Level 50, follow this link.
