Amiibo Training Guide: Mii Gunner (Wii U & 3DS)

Section 1: Amiibo Overview / Pros & Cons

Amiibo Overview

Miis are an uncommon sight in the amiibo metagame, and the Mii Gunner is perhaps the most common of the three types. In essence, it is an improved version of Samus. The Mii Gunner’s special moves – most notably its neutral and side specials – serve as great camping options. Its moveset is overall quite fast and has above-average range.

Unfortunately, the Mii Gunner suffers from several flaws, one of which is that it often struggles to KO opponents due to its weak smash attacks. Its AI has a few quirks as well: its tendency to camp is a double-edged sword: this behavior helps the Mii Gunner to avoid taking damage while simultaneously wearing down its opponent, but it also means that its AI is hesitant to get close and go for a KO. The Mii Gunner’s AI also occasionally uses its down special as a melee attack, which leaves it vulnerable.

The Verdict

The Mii Gunner requires very specific training to meet its maximum potential – it must learn to rely on its special moves. Charge Blast and Gunner Missile are absolutely essential to the Mii Gunner’s success.

Before you begin training your amiibo, you must equip it with a viable setup of stats and bonuses. The following build has been extensively tested and proven effective:

Mii Gunner – Recommended Custom Moves

  • Gunner Missile: Gunner Missile is a versatile projectile that gives the Mii Gunner a great camping option. Inputting this move like a smash attack fires a powered-up Super Missile.
  • Arm Rocket: A superior recovery move that allows the Mii Gunner to control its trajectory. It also grants more horizontal and vertical distance than the default up special.

Section 3: Training Your Amiibo

Amiibo training is a very specific task, and for the best possible results, you will need to go about it very carefully. You can’t just go all-out and use combos and aerials: both of these are frowned upon in the amiibo metagame. Instead, you should remain grounded at all times, punishing your amiibo for every aerial move it uses against you.

To help your amiibo properly utilize its moveset, you will mirror match it from Level 1 all the way to Level 50. Playing timed matches on Ω-form stages is highly recommended.

Mii Gunner – Training Tips

  • Primary damage-racking moves: forward tilt, down tilt, forward smash, Charge Blast, and Gunner Missile. The Mii Gunner’s forward tilt has good reach and deals decent damage, but has a bit of ending lag. Down tilt is surprisingly powerful and is best used at point blank. Forward smash has a very long hitbox, but has weak knockback and is unreliable as a KO move. Charge Blast is the Mii Gunner’s strongest projectile, and can be used in a number of different ways. Make sure to always have a full Charge Blast ready to use. Gunner Missile is functionally identical to Samus’ missile and is stronger when you input it like a smash attack.
  • Primary KO moves: Charge Blast and down smash. Full Charge Blasts are the Mii Gunner’s most optimal method of KOing opponents. It can be used from medium to far range to great effect. Down smash is an option for close-ranged combat, and hits on both sides.

When your amiibo finally reaches Level 50, its training will truly begin. Just like a real player, amiibo need match experience and practice against different characters. For more information on training your amiibo past Level 50, follow this link.
